  1. ESCORT B-17s EN ROUTE TO BERLIN

  3. Lt. Robert S. Johnson became the second
  4. highest scoring aerial ace of the Eighth 
  5. Air Force while flying the P-47 
  6. Thunderbolt.  On March 6, 1944, Johnson 
  7. was leading the 61st Fighter Squadron as 
  8. they provided escort to the First Air
  9. Task Force of B-17s during the first
  10. leg of the bombers' raid on Berlin. 
  11. The rear combat wing of the B-17s was
  12. attacked by approximately 100 enemy
  13. aircraft, primarily Bf 109s and FW
  14. 190s.  The 61st called for help, but no
  15. one was able to reach them during the
  16. combat, forcing them to defend the
  17. bombers on their own.
